Towards digital soil mapping of Thailand
Thailand has a long tradition of using detailed soil information in agriculture and watershed management. Agricultural extension workers locally named soil doctors, give advice on farm level on increasing agricultural production and combat land dgradation. Unfortunately, detailed soil information is only available for the flat areas hwere most of the agriculture used to be concentrated, with conventional soil mapping methods based on the US Soil Taxonomy classification system. As more and more of the hilly and mountainouse areas are being used there is now a district lack of detailed soil data for these services. Also the complexity of the service has increased, dealing with integrated watershed management, addressing sustainability and more complex forms of land degradation, soil conservation and infrastructure development.
