Everyday english for librarians
The Importance of foreign language competence for librarians was stated a long time ago by Rachel L. Crary in her classic study in 1982 entitled foreign language knowledge was significantly neede for librarians. Furthermore, foreign language course in graduate school would be beneficial to prepare the librarians for their future career.
The need to be proficient in foreign language even becomes more relevant now because of globalization which has triggered global connections among nations. For librarians, especially in non-English speaking countries like Indonesia, this means that they need one common language enabling them to participate in international communication and knowledge sharing.
Interstingly, books specifically designed to improve librarians english proficiency is still scare. The have to lear english using generic business english textbooks which cannot cater their needs. Therefore, everyday english for librarians aims at filling this void. Each chapter in this book is written with a theme relevant with their day to day task so that every librarian will find it easy to follow the lessons.
I believe that this book wil provide useful resources for the librarians in Indonesia and in other non english speaking countries. Finally, I hope this book wiil make important contribution to ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EFL (English Foreign Language) learning.
