The world of manned flight from its primitive beginnings through the sophisticated present to the science-fiction future makes up the scope of this book. It covers the history of flight, thr theory of aeradynamics, propulsion, navigation and air-traffic controll, testing, design and other aspects of this world. The volume consits of alternating text chapters and picyure essays. Some essays contain complementary material (for example, Chapter 3 and the accompanying essay deal with aerodynamics); others supplement the text chapters (Chapter 6 is a general discussion of navigation; essays 6 desribes one aspect of navigation, air-traffic control). The appendix comprises a glossary of airmen's slang and a a chronological list of t he highlights of manned flight.
