Modern elementary statistics
Everything dealing even remotle with the collection, processing analysis, interpretation of numerical data belongs o the domain of statistics. This includes such diversified tasks as calculating a basebal playe's batting average, collecting and presentingdata marriages and divorces, evaluating the merits of commercial products, or studying the vibations of airplanes or guides missiles. The word statistics itself is used in several ways. It denotes a collection of data such as those found in the financial pages of newspapers or, say, the Statistical Abstract of the United states, published annually by the Department of Commerce. A second mmeaning of statistics is that of the totality of methods employed in the collection, processing, analyzing, or interpreting of any kind of data, in this sense, statistics is a a branch of applied mathematics, and it is this field of mathematics which is the subject matter of this book.
