Urban geography an analytical approach
This book, like its predecessor, is intended primarily for the use undergraduates and graduates in urban geography courses, although it will also be of interest to students of urban planning, urban economic, and urban socio;logy. The major theme of the book and the faeture that continues to ditinguish iit g=from other texs in the field is the integrating of substantive and methodological material. The substantive material is attanged in such a manner as to allow the statistical techniques to be introduced in an orderly fashin, beginning with the simplest and following through to the more complex. No previous training in statistics is required, equations are kept to a minimum, and the various techniques are explained in conjunction with the empirical testing of particular models and theories. It is the authoar's experience that the majority of students can easily grasp the major element of these consepts if they are not burdened with mathematical proofs and are provided with appropriate schematic diagrams. More important, there is such a fine between theory and metodology in contemporary urban geography that it is almost impossible to appreciate the one other. The traditional device of relegating methodological and technical deiscussionss to an appendix is no longer appopriate, as theory development is integrally related to the calibrations and testing of models via ststistical techniques.
