Introduction to geodesy

Geodesy is that branch of applied mathematics whuch determines, by observation and measurement, the size and shape of the earth, thr coordinats of points, the lengths and directions of lines on the earth's surface, and the variations of terrestrial gravity. A study of gravity is useful in determining the shape, but not the size, of the earth. Although these twoparts of geodesy may be studied separately, in practice they are closely interwoven.
