The institut was organized to bring together the leading specialists in the field of map data processing for exchanging ideas and for setting directions for future research and devel;opment. An important secondary objectives was the bridging of some of the still-existing gaps of communication between researches in the geography-related disciplines and those in the pattern-recognition-, imageprocessing-, and computer-related disciplines.
